How to Locate Icons If You Don’t Know Which File Contains Them

If you’re not sure which executable or DLL contains the icons you want to change, Resource Tuner’s File Scanner can help you track them down. To locate and edit the icons, use Resource Tuner’s File Scanner to search your hard drive for embedded icon resources.

Finding file location with Resource Tuner

1. Switch to the Resource File Scanner. In Resource Tuner, select File Scanner from the left sidebar.

2. Open the Scanner Settings. Click the 'Scanner Settings' button (or press Ctrl+F) to start the wizard.

3. In the wizard, choose the folder where the application with the icons you want to change is installed. Enable 'Save found resources to disk' so all results will be copied out.

4. Choose Resource Types. In Step 2 of the wizard, select Icons from the Icons and Cursors category.
(Optional) Narrow your search by setting minimum and maximum icon size, e.g. 32x32, and color depth.

5. Configure Output. In Step 3, pick an Output folder for the extracted icons. Include the source file name in the FileName Mask (naming pattern). This way, each saved icon will show which EXE or DLL it came from.

6. Click 'Finish', then 'Start Scan' (or press F9). The scanner will extract all icons and save them to the output folder.

7. Check the Results. Browse the saved icons in the output folder until you find the one you’re looking for. The file name will tell you exactly which executable or library it was embedded in. Open that EXE or DLL in Resource Tuner. Replace the icon with your own, then save the changes.

This way, even if you have no idea where the icons are stored, the scanner will not only extract them all but also point you to the right file for editing.
